A global grief community
It takes a village to grieve out loud.
The problem
62 million people pass on each year, leaving behind circles of family, friends, colleagues, people grieving an absence the world gradually stopped making room for.
Over half a billion grievers. Every. Single. Year.
How it works
I
Tell your story
Write it, speak it, photograph it. Share it with the world or keep it just for you. However it comes out, it belongs to you.
II
Find your people
Matched by loss type. Connected across cultures. Whether you are walking alongside a loved one through illness, or carrying a loss you have already survived.
III
Gather in person
A real room. Real people. Local circles hosted by trusted care partners, and for those ready, journeys across cultures and borders.
No griever ever pays.
No griever should ever have to pay for support. Not a free tier with paid upgrades. Not a freemium model with limits. Free. Completely. For every griever. Everywhere. Always.
Travel.
When you are ready, you can physically travel to witness another culture's grief experience. To sit with a family in Singapore through a Buddhist memorial. To be present at a grief ritual in Nairobi. To cross a border not for leisure, but for belonging. Grief moves in person, across cultures, across borders. This is not a feature. This is the heart of it.

How it works
01
Tell your story
However it comes out. Words, photos, voice. Privately or shared with the community. There is no right way to begin. There is only beginning.
02
Find your people
Matched by loss type. Connected across cultures. Whether you are walking alongside a loved one through illness, or carrying a loss you have already survived.
03
Connect
When you find someone whose story resonates, you can offer them a hand — a gentle, single gesture that says you are here and you are willing. They choose whether to receive it. If they do, a private conversation opens between you. From there you decide together whether to meet in a Village circle, connect one to one, or simply write to each other for a while. Nobody is rushed. Nobody is ambushed. Every step is yours to take or not take.
04
Gather in person
A Village circle, hosted by a trusted care partner near you. A real room. Real people. The kind of presence a screen was never built to replace.
05
Discover the world's grief
A living map of grief stories from around the world. Browse, explore, find people carrying something similar across cities, cultures and time zones. Know the world is holding this too.
06
Travel
For those ready. Be invited to witness another culture's grief. Join a Village-organized journey across borders. Not for leisure. For belonging. For the understanding that only comes from being in the room.
The village has healers in it
Sometimes grief needs more than community. Sometimes it needs a guide.
The Village includes certified grief healers and death doulas woven into the fabric of the community. They facilitate Village circles, accompany travel experiences, and are available for one-on-one conversations when you are ready. You do not have to seek them out. They are already here.
Talk to a grief healer
A certified grief therapist who understands loss not as a condition to be treated but as an experience to be held. Available through the platform at no cost to you.
Talk to a death doula
A death doula walks alongside people through illness, dying, and the grief that follows. Trained in presence, ritual, and the kind of care that medicine alone cannot provide.
What it costs you
Nothing.
Not a subscription. Not a free trial that expires. Not a freemium model with a paywall when you need it most. The Village is completely free for every griever, everywhere, always.
No griever should ever have to pay for support. That is not a policy. It is a promise.
Your only job is to show up.
Travel
Some grief needs a room. Sometimes that room is in another country.
No platform in the world offers this. The Village does. When you are ready, you can go further than your own city, your own culture, your own understanding of what grief looks like.
I
You are invited
A local griever or family opens the door and invites you to attend their memorial or ritual. Travel costs can be covered through the sponsor-a-griever fund, through one of our partners, or self-funded for those stepping into the witness role.
II
You reach out
You request to observe a grief tradition in another culture. The Village facilitates the match and provides the safety framework. Travel is funded through the sponsor-a-griever fund or through our partners, so cost is never the reason you cannot go.
III
You join a Village journey
A curated, Village-organized cultural exchange, safe and deeply human. Funded through Village grants and corporate sponsors specifically earmarked for cross-cultural grief experiences.
You do not have to be ready now. Most people aren't. But when you are, the village will help you get there.
Privacy and safety
Your story is yours. Your safety is ours.
01
On connection
Nobody reaches you without your consent. Every connection on The Village is mutual. Both people agree before any contact begins. You are never ambushed by a message you weren't ready to receive.
02
On in-person gatherings
Every Village circle is hosted by a trusted care partner in a vetted, familiar space. You will never be asked to meet a stranger somewhere unfamiliar.
03
On travel
Every travel experience begins with mutual consent. We strongly encourage you to keep all travel planning and communication within the app, where our safety check-ins and support systems live. You are welcome to exchange contact details privately if you choose to, but we would always encourage you to plan within the village first.
04
On your data
Your grief story is sensitive personal data and we treat it that way. We will never sell your information. We will never share it without your explicit consent.
One promise above all: No griever is ever alone on this platform. Not digitally. Not physically. Not anywhere.
You don't have to carry this alone.
The village is being built for you. Tell us you're here and we will tell you when your village is ready.
For partners
Be the organization that didn't look away.
You know what happens after.
After the patient passes and the family goes home. After the funeral service ends and the mourners disperse. After the bereavement leave runs out and the employee comes back to their desk. After the policy is paid and the call ends.
The grief doesn't end. But your service does.
Most organizations do everything right up to that moment. The care, the professionalism, the compassion. And then the bereaved walk out the door into a world that has almost no infrastructure for what comes next.
That gap is not your fault. But it is yours to close. The Village exists to help you close it.
What a partnership looks like
Four ways to stand with us.
It starts with a conversation. No commitment, no contract, no cost at that stage. Just 20 minutes to explore whether The Village is right for your community.
01
Host
Host a Village circle in your space once a month, a room, a quiet corner, an hour of your calendar. A facilitated grief gathering for the people you already serve.
02
Refer
Give your team somewhere real to send bereaved families and clients as part of aftercare. One conversation, one link, one moment of genuine care that extends far beyond what you could build alone.
03
Sponsor Travel
Fund a griever's journey to a Village gathering, and let your name travel with them. A family in Singapore attending a grief ritual in Nairobi knows your organization made that possible. That is brand belonging.
04
Found Early
Donate early, before the first city launches, and stand as a founding partner in this journey from day one. We are inviting a small number of organizations across Singapore, London, and Nairobi to explore a founding partnership.
Who we partner with
Organizations that already care.
We are not asking you to start caring about grief. We are asking you to extend the care you already provide.
Category 01
Care and End-of-Life
Hospices and palliative care
You hold people through their final moments. We hold the families through what comes after.
Hospitals and healthcare
Bereavement follow-up is the gap in almost every care pathway. The Village closes it.
Oncology and cancer support
Illness, anticipatory grief, and bereavement live in the same place. The Village meets people there too.
Elderly and aged care
Residents lose friends and spouses constantly. Families grieve alongside them. Almost nobody serves this specifically.
Pregnancy and infant loss
Some of the most isolating grief there is, and among the most culturally minimized. The Village gives it a room, not a silence.
Funeral homes and death-care
The service ends. The grief doesn't. Give families somewhere to go.
Cemeteries and memorial parks
The people who return to your grounds are still grieving. Give them a reason to gather.
Palliative care training
Train the next generation with a real-world community resource built into their toolkit.
Category 02
Community and Support
Death doula associations
Your members guide people through death. The Village gives them a global community to belong to.
Grief therapist networks
Your clients need community alongside clinical support. The Village is where they find it.
Addiction and recovery communities
Grief and addiction are deeply intertwined. The Village is somewhere to bring what recovery alone cannot hold.
Category 03
Corporate and Institutional
Employers and EAP providers
Grief is the most universal life experience your employees will face. Give them more than a few days off.
Life and general insurers
The policy pays out at the worst moment of someone's life. The Village stays with them through it.
Funeral directors associations
One partnership gives every member a structured aftercare offering overnight.
Corporate wellbeing consultants
You already shape how companies care for their people. The Village becomes part of that recommendation.
Legal and estate planning firms
You are often the first professional contact after a death. A trusted referral in that moment carries real weight.
Memory and legacy tech
Your users create the memorial. The Village holds the people left behind.
Category 04 — Education
For schools ready to hold grief well.
Grief does not pause for school. A child who loses a parent, sibling, or friend still has to sit in a classroom the next week — usually with a teacher who isn't trained for it, classmates who don't know what to say, and a single overstretched counselor behind them.
Facilitation
Every student circle is led by a certified grief therapist or death doula trained specifically in working with minors. Never peer-facilitated. Never teacher-led. Non-negotiable.
Age banding
Three distinct circle formats — primary (8–11), secondary (12–15), and senior (16–18) — each with its own language, structure, duration, and emotional depth.
Parental consent
Every student under 18 requires explicit written parental or guardian consent before participating in any Village circle or activity.
How schools partner
Host
The school provides a room once a month for a Village student circle, facilitated by a certified Village therapist. The school opens the door — The Village runs the circle.
Integrate
The Village becomes a named part of the school's pastoral care offering, formally integrated into their student wellbeing program. The deeper, stickier partnership.
Exchange
For senior students, a cultural grief exchange trip as part of the school's international or service learning program — facilitated by The Village, with full parental consent and safety infrastructure.
Partner to partner
The network can grow itself.
Some of our strongest partnerships come from partners who already trust each other. If your organization is already in relationship with another in your ecosystem, three models make that growth mutual — whichever is most incentivizing, and equally beneficial to both sides.
Partner Referral
You refer another organization to The Village. When they sign a partnership agreement, your own annual partnership fee reduces. No cash changes hands between partners — just one relationship extending into another.
Co-Host
You and another local organization already working together — a hospice and a funeral home, for example — share a Village house space and split the annual partnership fee. Neither of you carries the full weight alone.
Anchor Partner
You become the named Village house host for your city. Higher visibility, the deepest brand presence, and every smaller partner in your city refers into your space.
Why organizations partner with The Village
Not just because it is the right thing to do.
Your families feel the difference
Bereaved families remember which organization held them not just through the loss, but through the grief that followed. That memory becomes loyalty, referrals, and reputation.
Your team feels the difference
Giving staff a meaningful resource to refer grieving clients to reduces the burden on care workers, social workers, and HR teams who currently have nowhere to point people.
Your brand feels the difference
"We partner with The Village" belongs in your annual report, your ESG disclosure, your job listings. It signals that your organization doesn't look away when the hard part begins.
Your data tells the story
Quarterly impact reports give you the numbers to prove it. Sessions hosted. Grievers supported. Connections made across cultures.
Your community travels
For organizations that sponsor griever travel, your name travels with them. That is not brand awareness. That is brand belonging.
Your partnership lasts
Village partnerships are built around multi-year relationships. The longer you partner, the deeper the impact data and the more meaningful your organization's role becomes.
Some partnerships change what an organization stands for. This is one of them.
Let's talk.
About
The founder
I am Sarah Houmani, the founder of The Village. Grief has been part of my life since I was eight years old. I have lost people I love more times than most people lose in a lifetime, across different relationships and different stages of my life. Every time I looked for a village to hold that grief with me. Every time the world moved on before I did.
The Village exists because of what I couldn't find when I needed it most — a place to sit fully inside my grief, in person, surrounded by people who already understood, without a word of explanation. So I built it: the village I was looking for, so no one else has to search for it as long as I did.
That belief — that if you build something real, people will show up for it — is the foundation The Village is built on.
A poem
If I don't share my grief with the people I love Does my grief even exist? Much like if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Because what if I can't? What if I don't know how to? What if I am the forest and the tree and the only one around to hear it. & What if I don't fall hard enough Or loud enough Or worse.. What if I don't fall at all? What if I am just a clumsy tree One that only trips and never falls. Much like if a tree trips in a forest but doesn't fall.. Does it even grieve at all?
Sarah Houmani
The mission
The Village was built so no griever has to be the forest, the tree, and the only one around to hear it. Free for every griever. Always. It takes a village to grieve out loud.
I am a griever
The village is waiting for you.
I am a potential partner
Let's build this together.
Stories
This space is for grief witnessed, not managed. Stories from grievers around the world, shared in their own words, at their own pace. Read slowly. You are not alone here.
Community stories
Loss of a parent, Lebanon
She used to hum while she cooked
I did not realize how much of my sense of home lived in that sound until the kitchen went quiet. Now I cook in silence and call it grief.
Loss of a spouse, Singapore
The other side of the bed
People keep telling me I will get used to the space. I do not want to get used to it. Getting used to it feels like forgetting.
Anticipatory grief, Nigeria
Grieving someone still here
My father is still alive. But the man I knew has been leaving for two years now, piece by piece. I do not know what to call what I feel. Is it grief if they are still breathing?
